Treblinka and Tykocin

Tykocin - Treblinka trip map On this trip we will show you two places related with Jewish history in Poland. The first one is Treblinka - the German extermination camp in occupied Poland during II World War.

The first labor camp was located in 1941. It was know as Treblinka I. Then within a year, when Nazis started to liquidate the Jewish Ghetto in Warsaw, the Treblinka II was built with the hands of the prisoners. It was elimination center for the Jews of central Europe. Nearly 750,000 Polish Jews were murdered here in gas chambers. The whole process of killing the people, starting from their arrival at the camp railroad till removing the corpses from the gas chambers, lasted only about 2 hours.
Treblinka
The visitors enter the camp through the same place that the Jews had exited the transport trains. In autumn 1943 all of the buildings were ordered to be destroyed so that no trace of its existence would remain. Only parts of the camp, such as the railway station, are still there. You will see also a large circular area with 1,700 stones of various sizes and colors, which represent a symbolic cemetery. Among of the stones there is the individual one honors Janusz Korczak, a Jewish director of an orphanage, who accompanied a group of orphans to the Treblinka camp, and died along with them.

Tykocin Synagogue From Treblinka our guide will take you to Tykocin – a small Jewish town. Its cobbled streets lined with old tenement houses or charming timber cottages look as if time had stopped there a long time ago. Here the great attraction is a visit in a synagogue Bejt ha-Kneset ha-Godol. You will also see a church of the Holy Trinity, Jewish cemetery - one of the oldest in Poland and ruins of castle of Zygmunt II August. The market square looks as it must have looked before the war: the low timber or brick cottages with high sloping roofs, verandahs and wooden fences are typical of little towns in pre-war Poland. Here the Jews lived on one side of the market square and the Christians lived on the other side. They did business together in the square; yet, kept a distance from one another and practiced their religions separately.

After a walk our guide will take you to the restaurant, where you can try Jewish cuisine.
